New Name for SharePoint Apps - SharePoint Add-Ins
Microsoft introduced a new name some time ago. Since then all the SharePoint apps have been called SharePoint add-ins. This change was initiated to ensure a clearer distinction between the extension platform and the Office apps (applications). To make things easier to understand, the table below shows the old name next to the new one.
