Migrated to Exchange Online for seamless cross-site collaboration
SoftwareOne case study

With SoftwareOne as trusted advisor, Starrag moved securely from on-premises to the Microsoft Cloud – and got more from it at every level.
Starrag AG is a global technology leader in high-precision machine tools, serving sectors from medical and dental technology and luxury goods to aerospace, energy and transportation. With around 1,400 employees across several manufacturing plants and a worldwide sales and service network, the Switzerland-headquartered company needed a modern, flexible IT foundation to match its international reach.
Working with SoftwareOne as a trusted advisor, Starrag migrated from an aging on-premises environment to Microsoft 365 – securely, cost-effectively and with strong user acceptance.

License strategy, security and contract negotiation support from SoftwareOne

Starrag's IT landscape stood at a critical crossroads. Many Microsoft licenses were expiring, and extended support for Office and Windows threatened to impose high costs. At the same time, the existing on-premises infrastructure could no longer meet the demands of a modern, internationally connected workplace – or could only do so at unreasonably high cost.
The company set out to migrate its IT infrastructure to the cloud and establish Microsoft 365 as the foundation for modern work. Beyond the technical migration, Starrag wanted a license strategy that optimized costs over the long term and guaranteed compliance at all times, uniform security standards such as multifactor authentication and Intune-based device management, and high user acceptance through clear communication and training.

Starrag chose SoftwareOne for its role as a trusted advisor – going beyond license sales to bring deep experience from complex Microsoft projects and an international network of specialists. The engagement began with comprehensive workshops to capture the requirements of all stakeholders and agree priorities, shaping a roadmap that delivered short-term benefits to users while securing the long-term move to a cloud-based Microsoft environment.
SoftwareOne followed a model proven across many Microsoft 365 implementations – an approach Starrag specifically requested so it could benefit from lessons learned elsewhere. A step-by-step rollout proved decisive: Microsoft 365 applications were introduced incrementally, supported by webinars and training, which built broad user acceptance from the very start. Once the Microsoft 365 environment had been carefully tailored to Starrag's needs, around 1,300 employees were migrated to Exchange Online and given access to the Office applications and Teams, greatly simplifying collaboration across sites.
Crucially, SoftwareOne configured settings and made decisions together with Starrag's IT team rather than working in the background – creating a lasting transfer of knowledge that left the team able to take many tasks forward independently.
The rollout of Microsoft 365 laid the foundation for modern working practices. Today, our teams can collaborate across locations in real time – more efficiently, more transparently and more flexibly than ever before.
