Síminn hf: Migrating SAP landscape to AWS
The Challenge
Síminn needed to move all their SAP workload using re-platforming and at the same time move from Oracle databases to S/4HANA, which is SAP's ERP for large enterprises. In addition, there were accounting data stored in AWS that needed to be addressed. There were no immediate plans to move to the cloud, and this project became a proven pilot.

SoftwareOne (formerly Crayon) has been a long-term partner of Síminn's IT partner. SoftwareOne ran their SAP on-prem environment. When SoftwareOne approached Síminn and asked them to evaluate migrating SAP to AWS, they trusted SoftwareOne's expertise to deliver without compromising their SAP landscape and improving performance and agility as expected.
SoftwareOne showed Síminn that they could get all questions answered correctly and get specialists from AWS or other companies needed to help.
Connectivity from Iceland to AWS data centers in Ireland was essential to be redundant and secure.
The Solution
After a successful proof of concept where SAP was deployed in AWS, and data was migrated from on-prem Oracle database to S/4HANA, and all relevant quality tests and expectations were met, SoftwareOne proposed architecture for their SAP onAWS environments.

Síminn had no plans to go to cloud until presented the abilities of both SoftwareOne and AWS to help them. After legal questions had be cleared and proof of concept was successful we felt convinced this was the way to go.

Migration to the AWS cloud
SoftwareOne supplied diagrams for suggested architecture to Síminn that included many different AWS components. OS (Operating System) was SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP bought from marketplace deployed using cloud formation templates. Amazon EFS (Amazon Elastic File System) was used for shared storage needs. AWS Direct Connect connection to the on-prem environment was deployed for connectivity with VPN tunnel as a failover.
One of the benefits of moving the SAP environment to AWS was the agility to deploy new servers very quickly when need be.

S/4HANA was deployed in a clustered mode for resiliency and redundancy.
After the SAP environments were migrated and re-platformed into AWS, many other side systems followed, and more services were added.
Síminn has, after this, expanded its use in AWS for other services.
Conclusion
The shift to AWS cloud for SAP was a success, and SoftwareOne delivered the project from planning, deployment to operating the environment.
There were issues along the way, and SoftwareOne efficiently resolved them. Cost optimization was conducted throughout, which resulted in sizeable savings.
Since moving to the cloud, there is much more agility to do changes and work on the systems. Now adding new components and doing tests is far less complex now.
