Building a modern remote workplace with cloud desktops

A large ship in the ocean.

A major oil and gas company invests in Amazon WorkSpaces to assure productivity and flexibility of its remote workforce

For this major APAC oil and gas company, traditional workforce IT logistics were complicated. The provision of hardware and application access for remote, mobile, and contract employees was slow and cumbersome. SoftwareOne Cloud experts recommended implementation of Amazon WorkSpaces as a managed, secure, Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) solution. The result has enabled end users to gain cloud access to desktops and applications from anywhere on any device. The solution has reduced IT expenses and can quickly increase or decrease in scale while simultaneously managing all desktops for workers across the APAC region.

About the client

This company is a global provider and operator of offshore floating platforms for the oil and gas industry. The company is recognized as a leading specialist for Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels, Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs), Production Semi- submersibles and Mobile Offshore Production Units. With more than 4,000 employees, the company has major hub offices in Singapore, Japan, the United States and multiple supporting facilities across all regions.

The challenge

With a large number of remote and mobile employees, logistics and hardware maintenance was a challenge for the company’s IT organization. It was particularly limiting to workforce flexibility, mobility, and productivity. Equipment distribution, application access, and recovery of resources was a slow and costly process. Expanding or shrinking capacity to meet seasonal demands involved manual processes that diminished agility and increased costs for services fulfillment.

The solution

SoftwareOne Cloud Advisory experts conducted a detailed analysis of the company’s IT operations and business requirements. Recommendations led to an extended implementation of Amazon WorkSpaces, a managed, secure, Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) solution. The solution can provision Windows or Linux desktops in just a few minutes and enables end users application availability by delivering cloud accessible desktops anywhere, anytime, on any device. A significant benefit of the solution is that it can quickly increase or decrease in scale and simultaneously manage thousands of desktops for workers across the globe. Adding to 200 Amazon WorkSpaces users in the US region, the SoftwareOne team facilitated workspace for 120 more users in the APAC region within an Amazon Virtual Private Network (VPC). In just five days, each user had easy and fast access to cloud accessible on-demand desktops and applications.

The result

  • Global provisioning and advanced cloud agility enable on-demand access to cloud desktops that provide both performance and scalability for remote, mobile, and contract employees.
  • Reduced IT expense for hardware maintenance and logistics with simplified desktop delivery and reduced complexity in hardware inventory and systems management.
  • Improved workforce flexibility, mobility, and productivity for users by easy and fast access to desktops of their choice anywhere and anytime.
  • Increased data security through Amazon Virtual Private Network (VPC) deployment and assured reliability with AWS cloud fabric redundancy.
  • Cloud scalability and flexibility enable an automated IT infrastructure that can quickly scale, tailored to the needs of workforce change.
