CEO Predictions: Top Technology Trends for 2020

  • 25 一月 2022

One of our seven core tenants on which we base our company’s values is speed in which we aim to move even faster than the rate of the business environment – without compromising on quality – in order to provide our customers with the best possible technology solutions. To that end we are always looking ahead to determine the best course of action for our customers in relation to their business needs. Below you can find our top three predictions for what 2020 will bring in the world of technology.

Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI ) and Machine Learning (ML) has again topped the list and will be essential for driving strategic business decisions. Gartner has recently predicted that “by 2023 the number of people with disabilities employed will triple due to AI and emerging technologies reducing barriers to access.” Being able to expand the workforce is paramount in an age of skill gaps and resource shortage. Of course, the real goal here is to move away from program-specific tasks that are pre-programmed and typical in today’s AI capabilities and move towards “general knowledge” where the machine can learn on the fly – we are still far from this possibility but it will likely come faster than we think. This leads of course to ….

Whether it’s big data, storage of data, analysis of data, or security of data – data is the crux of what makes everything else possible. However, where the data now resides is what is shifting. According to IDC, by 2023, more than 50 percent of enterprise generated data will be created and processed outside the data center or cloud, up from less than 10 percent last year. Furthermore the sheer amount of data being created and processed is set to grow from 40 zettabytes in 2019 to 175 zettabytes in 2025. How companies effectively use this data (in a secure manner) could be the difference between success and failure. A recent Harvard Business Review Analytics Services Pulse Survey found that 86 percent of organizations agree that that the ability to extract insights from said data is important, only 30 percent are able to do so. In addition, only 28 percent of organizations are able to create new business models leveraging the data – a key factor towards digital transformation.

Digital Transformation

And of course, we can’t have a 2020 predictions list without Digital Transformation - a topic that could likely have its own predictions blog as it is the culmination of taking the best of today’s top technology trends to ensure our business are more efficient than ever – meeting customer demand at the fastest pace possible. The ultimate in digital transformation is leveraging blockchain, AI, data, IoT, 5G and the number of other innovations to create a user experience (UX) or customer experience (CX) that is unparalleled to what the end-user is accustomed to. There are many examples that we can cite of how digital transformation helps a company to continue to succeed in times when turbulence is the norm. One recent example is Nike – the running shoe and athletic apparel company. The company’s growth started to slow and by improving its connection to customers via data analytics, digital marketing and enhanced concept stores, Nike saw its stock price increase from $52 in 2017 to over $100 at the end of 2019. Time will tell if the transformation is sustained but it certainly put Nike back on the competitive path.

There are many other topics we could cover in this article such as skills gap/talent acquisition, blockchain, 5G, etc. however the topics above are the three key areas we see our customers focusing on in 2020. In addition, in our next 2020 trends article, next month, we will cover off on cybersecurity a topic that touches every technology innovation in today’s world. Applying security across the technology stack is something we strive for at SoftwareONE ensuring we work with both our key partners and our customers to protect our customer’s most important asset – its data. I look forward to connecting with you over the course of the year and I welcome your comments and feedback. I think my statement from last year still holds true and we are here to help you move your Digital Transformation needs forward in 2020:

“The challenges facing businesses who are on their way to the cloud, in the cloud or not even considering the cloud are very different, and increasingly businesses will be looking to partner with solution providers who understand their needs regardless of where they are in their cloud journey.”
