The vendor of HR automation software already has more than 12,000 global SME customers and in SoftwareOne (formerly Crayon), it has found a champion with a shared vision to help more customers take their people operations to the next level.

Human Resources is about the most precious resource of any organization: the people who work for it. However, the workflows of HR departments are often a maze of fragmented workflows, business processes, and systems, making it easy to overlook this simple fact.

In 2016, three Spanish tech entrepreneurs, Jordi Romero, Bernat Ferrero, and Pau Ramon, recognized that HR was a weak spot in the digital transformation of most organizations and developed a user-friendly HR software platform to automate time, talent and finance processes for SMEs.

The founders called their solution Factorial, after a mathematical function that expresses exponential growth.

“The name proved apt,” says Marvin Molijn, Factorial’s Head of Strategy, Partners, and Global Expansion, “because we have scaled rapidly, and now have more than 12,000 customers in more than 64 countries, and almost a million daily users.

“SoftwareOne is also a company that scales rapidly; it shares our vision. And like us, SoftwareOne is a global outfit that operates on a local level, and like us works closely with the Microsoft ecosystem. So there was a broad affinity that made SoftwareOne a good fit to partner with.”

The success of Factorial is due not only to the quality of the software itself but also to the flexibility with which it has been brought to market. “Factorial automates all aspects of HR in one central place: performance management, expenses, time management, document management, and recruitment processes. This is the core of our solution.

A consultative approach

“We bring a consultative approach and focus on understanding the needs of our clients, so we can offer them a bundle where they only pay for what they need. Factorial is very easy to use and to set up, solely focusing on that SME segment. With the high level of customization possibilities of the platform, we are able to serve clients in more than 64 countries.

“We have a marketplace with some 80 integrations for HR consultants, payroll providers, or ERPs such as Microsoft’s Business Central, which is one of the most popular integrations that we have. So what you might call the second circle around Factorial is wide-ranging. Our Open API for custom integrations further optimizes the versatility of our HR platform.”

All this would count for little if the solution itself did not perform to best-of-breed standards. “Onboarding is very easy, not only for the HR department itself, but also for C-level, and employees. In general, the program is designed for the user to reach everything in two clicks.”

All companies that implement Factorial experience significant time savings around HR processes such as document management or the uploading of payroll slips. “The benefits are most dramatic for SMEs moving from offline pen and paper, as still happens,” says Molijn. “The digitization of HR processes takes away a lot of manual work and the possibility of human error. HR should not be an administrative department but focus as much as possible on people.”

SoftwareOne is also a company that scales rapidly; it shares our vision. And like us, SoftwareOne is a global outfit that operates on a local level and like us, works closely with the Microsoft ecosystem. So there was a broad affinity that made SoftwareOne a good fit to partner with.

Marvin Molijn

Head of Strategy, Partners, and Global Expansion, Factorial

Factorial takes this to the next level with the introduction of AI. “It’s so great,” says Molijn. “It adds to the biggest value that Factorial brings for our clients: making the right business decisions based on data and quick analytics. Instead of spending time on setting up different dashboards and graphs, you can just ask the AI function which employee took the most holidays, or which department saw the largest increase in expenses over the past year. And AI gathers the data and creates an insightful graph for you in a few seconds. Same with summarizing and suggestive action points, it’s already there in the performance reviews. And this is rolled out more and more within the platform. It’s run on Microsoft AI technology because, like SoftwareOne, we have very close ties with Microsoft and its ecosystem from Microsoft partners to integration with Microsoft’s product suite – Teams, Business Central, PowerBI, and so on.”

Factorial is investing heavily in partnerships; in the past two years, it has gone from five employees dealing with partners to an 80-strong team just focusing on the partnership element of its growth strategy.

“Of course, we wanted to speak with SoftwareOne. They are a big player and we got referred to them by the Microsoft ecosystem. They have a wide reach. SoftwareOne can bring us many partners as well. And we also like the combination of indirect and direct sales [on the SoftwareOne channel] because our go-to-market is to work directly with clients, but also with the partners of SoftwareOne.”

The partnership will create value in different ways. “If the conversation starts with the need for HR automation, you will get to know the company, and organically, you might get the opportunity to do a cloud migration or an AI project. Or it’s the other way around, where one of your ERP or cloud management clients starts looking for an HR solution.”

Transacting on SoftwareOne's Cloud-iQ

The conversation with Crayon started five months ago, and the Factorial products are now transactable through Crayon’s Cloud-iQ.

“We are interested in multiple markets but South Africa and the Nordics are new territories where we are gaining significant traction,” says Molijn. “And this is something where Crayon supports us in getting feet on the ground and getting the right interest to the right stakeholders.

“We have tremendous support from Morgan Wabø [Global ISV Business Developer at Crayon]. Morgan is really an ambassador for Factorial within Cloud-iQ and also the local entities. And with a distributor the size of Crayon, you probably need that. So in Morgan, we have that champion who is happy to promote us within Crayon and that sets Crayon apart from other partners.”

A first joint marketing step is typically to jointly contact the SME clients in a partner’s database. “This usually triggers a great response,” says Molijn, “because many will need HR software, and 10 to 20 percent of these calls result in a demo.”

The solution immediately appeals for two reasons, Molijn believes. First, the adoption of HR software among SMEs is still relatively immature. "Factorial is 100% designed for SMEs and can work in conjunction with other SME tools like major ERPs such as Microsoft, SAP, and many others. Typically, the people management tools were designed for bigger companies, and we believe all SMEs need the best tech stack to compete with larger enterprises."

“Factorial partners with Microsoft to bring the best value and empower its customers with the right solutions to grow their business,” Molijn concludes. “The partnership with Crayon will strengthen that proposition, and I expect us to go from strength to strength in the Nordics and beyond.”
