Why Solutions Partner Designations deserve a second look

Many Microsoft partners are aware of the Solutions Partner Designation (SPD) program, but it’s easy to underestimate the significant profitability and services growth opportunities this program can deliver.

For growing MSPs, the SPD requirements naturally align with business objectives already underway such as increasing customer adoption, expanding user counts, and introducing additional Microsoft workloads. These activities not only strengthen recurring revenue but also create opportunities for additional professional services engagements, often supported by Microsoft funding. In practice, technical certifications are often the primary area that requires dedicated planning.

With all of that in mind, this blog post takes a fresh look at how achieving SPD can accelerate business growth, improve margins, and reward the investments partners are already making in their Microsoft practice.

A quick refresher: what SPDs cover

A Microsoft Solutions Partner Designation (SPD) recognizes partners that have demonstrated strong technical capability, customer success, and expertise in a specific Microsoft solution area. It helps customers identify partners that have a proven track record of delivering quality outcomes with Microsoft technologies. In its latest update, Microsoft has also simplified Solutions Partner badging by grouping the six existing designation pathways under three badges aligned with its commercial solution areas.

Solution Partner Designation Solution Partner Badge Name
Business Applications Solutions Partner for AI Business Solutions
Modern Work
Data & AI (Azure) Solutions Partner for Cloud & AI Platforms
Digital & App Innovation (Azure)
Infrastructure (Azure)
Security Solutions Partner for Security

Achieving an SPD therefore shows that your business is growing in one of Microsoft's key strategic solution areas and can help you stand out in a competitive market.

To earn a Designation, partners need to achieve at least 70 Partner Capability Score (PCS) points, with a minimum of one point in each category within the chosen solution area. The good news is that partners have the flexibility to choose which categories to focus on within a solution area.

Eligible CSP indirect resellers may not need to wait until full Designation to start receiving value. Those with at least 25 PCS points in the relevant solution area may qualify for certain Microsoft CSP incentives, provided they meet the applicable authorization, enrollment, revenue and program requirements. This means some growing MSPs could quickly access incentive opportunities while continuing to work towards the full 70-point Designation threshold.

Why do SPDs deserve a second look?

Many partners are not aware that at least one of the Microsoft SPDs available likely already fits your current growth priorities in your business, and you are probably already on your way to achieving the 70-point requirement for full attainment without even knowing it.

Some of the benefits that SPD provide are:

Standing Product Benefits Access Azure bulk credits, development environments, on-premises licenses and cloud services subscriptions such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft 365 E5 and more.
New Product Benefits Use enhancements to Teams, Copilot products, GitHub, Microsoft Defender for Endpoints, Power Apps and Power Automate Premium.

Why these Designations matter more than ever

Customers are looking for proven expertise they can trust. A Microsoft Solutions Partner Designation (SPD) provides independent validation that a partner has demonstrated:  the skills, experience, and customer success required to deliver meaningful outcomes. It helps partners stand out in a crowded market where many organizations claim expertise, but fewer can substantiate those claims through Microsoft-recognized credentials and measurable performance.

Beyond credibility, SPDs create a foundation for long-term growth and business success. Designated partners gain access to a range of Microsoft benefits, including go-to-market opportunities, co-sell engagement, partner resources, and incentive and funding programs that can help accelerate growth.

For many organizations, achieving an SPD is also the first step in a broader capability journey, opening the door to advanced specializations, deeper Microsoft alignment, stronger customer relationships, and a more profitable services practice.

What to do next: setting your attainment goal

1. Review where you are today

Start by understanding your current PCS score and how it aligns to your business growth strategy. SPD should be viewed as an outcome of executing your growth plan, not the goal itself.

2. Have a plan

Create a documented growth plan that identifies your target Microsoft workloads, customer segments and required capabilities. As you map these priorities, identify the certifications and skilling investments required to support them. For most partners, certifications are the only SPD component that requires deliberate planning, making them an ideal place to focus early.

3. Stay on track

Regularly review your PCS progress and adjust your plan as business priorities evolve. Consistency matters. Small improvements in customer growth, skilling and solution delivery compound over time, helping you achieve Designation while building a stronger Microsoft practice.

4. Fully leverage all benefits

There are many benefits to obtaining the Solution Partner Designation ranging from additional margin to marketing, presales and post sales/ delivery funding available to you as an SPD holder. These benefits will help you outmaneuver your competition by being able to provide more benefit to your clients and more profitability for your business at the same price point.
