FIEG drives digital transformation with cloud migration and generative AI solutions in partnership with SoftwareOne and AWS

With an on-premises datacentre that limited innovation, FIEG (the Federation of Industries of the State of Goiás), encompassing SESI, SENAI, and IEL, was facing challenges to keep pace with an increasingly digital market. What began as an assessment for backup and disaster recovery in the cloud quickly evolved into a strong business case for a full-scale digital transformation. The solution was a complete migration to the AWS cloud, alongside the development of a suite of AI initiatives—led by SoftwareOne, a global provider of software and cloud technologies.

The migration project

AWS conducted a detailed assessment of FIEG's technological environment and identified key migration opportunities. With an on-premises setup, FIEG had to plan for a five-year horizon, requiring recurring investments in infrastructure, servers, and telecom.

Following the business case presented by AWS, SoftwareOne was selected to lead the migration project after standing out in the bidding process. The contract, signed in August 2023, outlined a full migration of the datacentre to AWS over three years.

“We started the project with a short assessment of just 40 days, after which we presented a plan using a ‘lift and shift and re-platforming’ strategy to meet the speed and scope the client demanded,” explained Otavio Argenton, Country Manager at SoftwareOne.

To execute the complex migration, which was completed by December 2023, specialized tools were used for complete environment mapping and pre-migration technical tasks.

The results were remarkable: more than 2,100 project hours, 111 servers, 200 applications, and 130 databases—totaling 50 terabytes—were migrated in a “Big Bang” operation, all at once, with no partial steps. The project reached 2,300 employees, 10,000 students, and 70,000 individuals affiliated with FIEG institutions.

“We were positively surprised by the technical team's support, both during and after the project. They used active listening, agility, and expertise to meet our needs, followed the entire planned schedule, and even enabled us to develop new solutions,” added Marcos Paulo Fraga, IT Manager at FIEG.

A leap in accessibility with generative AI

Building on the migration’s success, FIEG addressed a new educational challenge—making academic content more accessible for students with visual and hearing impairments. Previously, these students waited days for manual transcription and subtitling of class recordings.

“Digital inclusion is a major priority for educational institutions, especially in the context of distance learning. The delay in accessing learning materials affected students with disabilities and was a constant concern for us,” said Fraga.

AWS and SoftwareOne developed an innovative solution, applying generative AI to automate and accelerate content adaptation.

Key technologies included:

Amazon Polly: converts texts to audio, aiding visually impaired students with PDF and Word content.
Amazon Textract: extracts text from varied document formats to improve material access.
Amazon Transcribe: generates automatic subtitles for class recordings, cutting down on manual work.

Integrated into SESI and SENAI’s Moodle LMS portals, the solution also uses Amazon Bedrock to analyze content and provide personalized summaries and insights using generative AI. Students now receive immediate access to course materials, breaking down major accessibility barriers.

“This secure, reliable, and flexible solution not only guarantees inclusion, but also optimizes the entire teaching and learning process, creating a more accessible and equitable experience in SESI and SENAI’s distance learning environment,” emphasized Argenton.

Attendance, engagement, and support for teachers

Continuing the innovation journey, AWS, SoftwareOne, and the FIEG system—through SESI and SENAI—are developing two new AI-based classroom tools.

The first is automated attendance tracking, using AWS SageMaker and Amazon Rekognition for facial recognition through in-class cameras. This eliminates manual roll calls, saving time and increasing accuracy.

The second initiative is real-time sentiment analysis, evaluating facial expressions and behaviors to gauge student engagement. These insights help teachers adjust their methods based on student receptivity, creating more adaptive learning environments.

“These two innovative projects, to be implemented shortly, represent a significant leap in the digital transformation of SESI and SENAI’s education programs—bringing efficiency, personalization, and improvements in teaching quality,” said Fraga.
