Customisation and standalone development for Copilot for Microsoft 365

Microsoft Copilot is not just a product. It is a visionary concept: intelligent assistants based on artificial intelligence (AI) are intended to help users as their “everyday AI companion” directly at their workplace and to revolutionise their work. Since 2022, Microsoft has been launching more and more of these AI assistants on the market, and since September 2023 they have officially been grouped under the “Microsoft Copilot” brand. The importance of this concept for Microsoft is illustrated by two sentences from November 2023: “Microsoft is the Copilot company. And soon there will be a Copilot for everyone and for everything you do.”

AI applications in general and Copilots in particular offer even better performance if they are customised to the specific requirements and characteristics of their usage scenarios, for example with regard to the data sources to be used, specific workflows, guidelines and responsibilities or other relevant context factors. Microsoft therefore offers an increasing number of tools for adapting and expanding Copilots without great effort or developing customised Copilots for your own tasks.

Using Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 as an example, this white paper gives you an overview of the options for customising Copilot and developing your own Copilots. We outline how Copilot for Microsoft 365 works, take a look at various customising options and present useful tools.
