End of Service 2020: What You Need to Know to Get Ready
What is End of Service?
Software is central to the operations of modern organizations. It plays a part in helping every team within your business work more efficiently and effectively. However, many kinds of software adhere to a product lifecycle that concludes in an “end of service” date. Once this date has been reached, the manufacturer will no longer support that particular edition of their software.
Why is It a Problem?
Following end of service, organizations will no longer receive any updates or support for the affected software. This includes security updates, bug fixes and technical support. With software being central to your organization, being unprepared for an end of support event can interrupt business continuity and operations, and compromise devices or even entire corporate networks.
You often only have three to twelve months to prepare for a product’s end of support. During this time, the software can still be used – but waiting until the support has expired can put your organization at risk. End of service damages security and affects network stability and compatibility.
What’s Going Out of Service?
List of critical Microsoft solutions that are end of support in 2020.
Exchange Server 2010 – The end of support date for Exchange Server 2010 was originally January 14, 2020, but Microsoft announced it will be extended by approximately 10 months.
Sharepoint Server 2010 – Extended support for SharePoint Server 2010 ends in October 2020. It’s not too late to start planning an upgrade or migration to the latest version of SharePoint whether your plans are on-premises, in the cloud, or somewhere in between.
Office 2010 – Support for Office 2010 will end on October 13, 2020 and there will be no extension and no extended security updates. All of your Office 2010 apps will continue to function. However, you could expose yourself to serious and potentially harmful security risks.
How Can SoftwareONE Help?
End of service puts your data at risk. Unlike with Windows Server and SQL, Microsoft does not offer paid Extended Security Update (ESU) for these products. Hackers know end of support deadlines mean Microsoft’s defenses are down. Don’t put yours and your customers’ sensitive data at risk by becoming a victim of a cyberattack.
You have several options to mitigate the risk that comes with end of service. Whether it’s upgrading to a newer version or making the leap to the cloud, with only a few months left before support ends on these products, now is a good time to look at your options and SoftwareONE is here to help.
