The Death of the Microsoft Select Plus Agreement – Who Should You Contact for Help?

With the end of the Select Plus agreement looming ever closer, Microsoft has been actively engaging with ALL commercial Select Plus customers advising them to contact their licensing partner regarding the retirement of Select Plus.

As of July 1, 2015, Microsoft will no longer offer new commercial Select Plus agreements, but customers can continue to make purchases and renew Software Assurance through their existing Select Plus agreements. However, as of July 2016, commercial customers will no longer be able to place new orders or renew Software Assurance.

As the ideal replacement to Select Plus, Microsoft is introducing the Microsoft Products and Services Agreement (MPSA) which allows customers to make the same volume licensing purchases as with Select Plus while offering the capability to purchase online services – all with 20 less pages of T’s & C’s.

An Overview of the Microsoft Products and Services Agreement

The MPSA empowers organizations to purchase software and online services at any time through a designated unit within your organization defined as a Purchasing Account. This simplifies Volume Licensing purchases anywhere from Office 365 to CRM Online, with additional products being continuously rolled out in future releases.

This hybrid structure between purchasing licenses and online services provides significant value-add for customers. MPSA allows them to evaluate cloud services because they can commit to a certain number of licenses, then add to that if they decide to use the services more widely.

Therefore, as the end of the Select Plus agreement looms ever closer, what should you do, and who should you contact to help with this transition?

In July 2014, Microsoft released a statement highlighting SoftwareONE’s involvement in developing the MPSA:

As part of that strategy, the firm worked with Microsoft and other partners to design the Microsoft Products and Services Agreement (MPSA). This shorter, less complex software licensing agreement helps streamline contract creation, enhance customer service, and increase revenue opportunities.”

The SoftwareONE Software Portfolio Management methodology fits the MPSA model precisely from a commercial, technical, and compliance perspective. For instance, as organizations expand, they need the flexibility to immediately acquire software for specific projects without having to enroll in separate agreements, which is especially crucial for global companies that want to include all countries under the same agreement.
