During October – National Cybersecurity Awareness Month – we educated you on the importance of security in today’s cloud-first IT environment. As more organizations move data and services to the cloud, attackers are becoming more sophisticated with the end goal to steal intellectual property (or even destroy entire companies) and IT departments are finding themselves with a cybersecurity skills deficit while trying to keep the proverbial lights on for the day to day business.
Further, the impact a security breach has an organization is staggering. The numbers speak for themselves:
- More than 360,000 of new malware samples are created and spread everyday
- $3.86 million – the average cost of a data breach
- 93% of breaches take advantage of human error (typically email phishing)
The entire cybercrime supply chain is stacked with tools, tactics and procedures to compromise unassuming users and the corporate assets of an organization.
The expanding attack surface has also increased significantly.
So, what can you do to protect your organization? There are three critical steps to take to ensure your company, the employees and customers are protected:
- Harden the various points of attack to deter cyber criminals in the first place
- Identify your most business critical assets and put additional security measures behind those assets
- Define business processes to follow in regards to security – particularly those that train the employees to become more aware of potential security threats
Our infographic covers more on the current threats, risks, costs and effects of a data breach.
Finally, to close out National Cyber Security Awareness Month we’ve interviewed our top security experts at SoftwareONE to get their take on the security landscape today.
Eric Kim, Managed Security Services Practice Lead at SoftwareONE:“A tangible single vendor security solution is Nirvana. (Eric will speak more on this concept in our upcoming blog, “Part 3: Security Platform Play.” ) Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) have a never ending list of issues to tackle and meeting with up to a dozen different security vendors simply isn’t possible. Having a single point solution would be ideal and is nearing reality.”
Bali Kuchipudi, Product Marketing Leader, Security, SoftwareONE, “October and National Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a great way to help organizations and people to take notice of the various security risks that can potentially compromise our company’s and personal information. Using he lessons learned in October, be aware that there is a market for your company and personal information, people are willing to pay a lot of money for this critical and sensitive information. Make every day a security awareness day, understand your risks, think like a hacker and protect the sensitive information.”
Auro Rigotti, Cloud Security Architect, SoftwareONE, “SoftwareOne believes security is the core of any cloud deployment, and to secure all that workload often creates an unnecessary burden for the company caused by the management portion of it. With that in mind, we have engineered a top-notch service to help companies to keep their data compliant with their security needs, also simplifying the operational process to maintain it. ”
