2021 was a record-breaking year for data breaches and this year has been no exception. According to the 2021 Annual Data Breach Report, the overall number of data compromises is up more than 68%. And with the rapid adoption of cloud services, cloud security will remain a top priority for security leaders in the coming years.

Many of the security breach headlines are associated to global, wide-spread compromises that impact large enterprises, such as the attack on the largest meat supplier that halted operations at many of its US and Australian processing plants. However, the SMB market is also quite vulnerable due to increases in supply-chain attacks against their IT service providers. In fact, statistics show that 71% of ransomware attacks target small to medium sized businesses.

Cyber criminals are also targeting managed service providers and hosters as a route to attack and disrupt their clients’ businesses at-scale. According to Acronis’ whitepaper “MSPs Can Turn the Rising Ransomware Threat into Revenue”, 3 out of 5 MSPs had to deal with a ransomware attack with their SMB clients last year. In addition, 89 percent of SMBs would consider hiring a new MSP if offered the right cyber security solution.

Building trust with clients through a security-first strategy

The clean-up of a cyber attack is a costly endeavor with some estimating downtime costs ranging from $10,000 to $260,000 per hour. This could be a devastating loss for an SMB client and put significant strain on the MSPs reputation and future business in addition to potential legal exposure.

Implementing a security-first strategy at the heart of the MSP business model is critical. You are establishing a high degree of trust with your clients that will carry throughout all aspects of your engagements. In addition, you are building a profitable, recurring and high-value offering by extending security services to your clients.

With Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud, service providers can deliver profitable, low-churn cyber protection services that will let customers conduct business fearlessly in an increasingly cyber crime-laden world.
