Why Does SAM

Stumble in the Dark?

Why Does SAM Stumble in the Dark? | SoftwareONE

There are many reasons why Software Asset Management (SAM) projects fail – most notably because organizations typically treat SAM as just that, a project. In reality SAM is not a project but a continuous cycle that requires constant attention, checking, and tweaking. It is not simply installing a tool and hoping for the best, but it is understanding that putting the right people, processes, and technology in place can significantly impact an organization’s bottom line in a positive way – taking the unknown (or dark) out of SAM and shining a light on it.

In a past blog by Kevin Hooton, SoftwareONE’s North American Software Lifecycle Management lead, he noted that 75% of all large technology investments fail. That is a large number but can often be related back to two distinct issues: not having executive buy-in on a certain initiative, and what we like to call “dirty data.” As we just noted in a recent podcast by Darryl Sackett, global director of Software Lifecycle Management, data is one of the key issues we are helping customers with on a continuous basis in relation to their SAM strategy, and their business in general. Using machine learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to find trends in the data takes it even one step further to allow our customers to stay one step ahead of the publishers and have heightened awareness around their licensing and software entitlements, inventory and consumption – be it on-premises or in the cloud.

Now that we know a few of the reasons why SAM can fail, what can we do to ensure SAM is in fact successful?

We hosted a series of webinars to help you ensure a successful SAM journey. The first webinar, “Why Does SAM Stumble in the Dark?” will take a more in-depth look at how to avoid the common mistakes many organizations make on their SAM journey and what steps you can take to ensure you are on the right path. We will also touch on how SAMSimple – our packaged, cost-effective SAM Managed Service for small to medium sized customers, may be the first step for your company to feel less apprehensive about Software Asset Management. SAMSimple allows organizations to move past the dark, typically unfounded fears, that SAM can pose and into the light – towards a comprehensive, strategic approach of SAM – right-sized for your business needs.
