Virtual reality (VR) offers plenty of opportunities for large and small companies. A study by Dell & Intel – the Dell & Intel Workforce Study Global Report – revealed that 52% of millennials (GEN Y) believe that virtual reality will increase workplace productivity, while only 35% of the baby boomers share this conviction. So it depends on the age group with which the issue is discussed.
I’d like to use the following examples to show how the issue of virtual reality carved a niche in the world of work some time ago. I will also explain which advantages are inherent to these application scenarios
Use Case 1: Support – At any time, worldwide
Virtual realities (i.e. mixed reality) cut the need to travel and in doing so reduce jetlag, accommodation costs and expense accounts. Employees can support colleagues in their work around the world and just-in-time, without setting foot in a car or an airplane. As an example, mixed reality is an ideal way to consult international specialists in the event of any problems. This way, solutions can be implemented on the ground by remote means, wherever they happen to be needed.
Use Case 2: Collaboration – Global, virtual and agile
Virtual realities allow colleagues to get together and collaborate, no matter how far apart they happen to be. Unlike straightforward videoconferencing, virtual reality applications give participants the feeling that they’re all in the same room, which helps to boost efficiency. Among other things, projects can be monitored and worked on in real time.
Use Case 3: Training – Lifelong learning
Our world is becoming increasingly complex; product development cycles are speeding up all around and their lifetimes are extended as well. So lifelong learning has become a crucial factor. Virtual reality in all its manifold varieties can help companies organize their in-house training and assist in the introduction of new methodologies. Indeed, virtual reality is an ideal training tool, as it is the only remote way for employees to immerse themselves completely in authentic (learning) scenarios.
As the biggest retail corporation with more than 10,000 sales outlets, Walmart already uses virtual reality in its 200 academies. Among other things, employees in the United States are prepared in this way for “Black Friday”.
