There are more than 1 billion people - or 15% of the global population - with a disability, either permanent or temporary, including those affecting visual, mobility, hearing, cognitive, speech and neural functions. Yet despite the clear and proven benefits a diverse workforce brings, only 47% of people with disabilities in the UK are in employment, versus 80% of the non-disabled population. The numbers are similar in the US where the Brookings Institute cites that only 40% of adults with disabilities in their prime working years (ages 25-54) have a job compared to 79% of all working-age adults.
Being inclusive isn’t just about adapting physical spaces; technological literacy is just as vital for social inclusion. Organizations need to make IT accessible to ensure people with disabilities can work effectively. New legislation that came into effect in the UK in September 2019 has brought this topic to the top of the corporate culture agenda. Likewise this year marks the 30th anniversary of the institution of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which was landmark legislation to ensure all have the right to work. The theme is to work on “Increasing Access and Opportunity.”
