As we move through this time of uncertainty in the business environment due to the current health pandemic, we begin making permanent moves towards a new business structure that allow for minimal pitfalls and disruptions in the future. In the post-pandemic world, mobilizing for digital change, embarking upon new ways of working, and adopting fresh mindsets are no longer just for cutting edge companies. Digital change is on everyone’s agenda, thanks to the pandemic, the lockdown, and the subsequent business challenges felt around the world. Three-quarters of Fortune 500 companies are experiencing accelerated technological transformation because of the crisis – and to keep up, it’s important to have a comprehensive strategy backed by expert guidance.

Amid fear of the unknown and uncertainty about the future, there are steps that your business can take toward Digital Transformation to help your business thrive in the new normal. Whether you are re-energizing your move to the cloud, beefing up security, or seeking better digital platforms to help you manage and scale a growing digital footprint, this challenging time has an opportunity to become somewhat exciting. Solid Ground in a Shifting Landscape

While many businesses are beginning to find their footing after a significant disruption, they are also realizing that there will be no return to business as usual. The first step toward building a sound strategy for technological transformation is to recognize that the landscape could shift at any time. In other words, you will need to build for flexibility and scalability. The more agile your company becomes, the more resilient it is – a great hedge against any future crises.

However, many of the changes made in haste during the lockdown may become permanent. Considering the speed at which companies moved to enable a newly remote workforce, the outcome has not been disastrous. On the contrary, personal productivity remains strong in the work from home context. 75% of respondents to one survey reported that they feel productive when they need to focus at home.

Collaboration is better, too, with a similar percentage reporting that they are collaborating effectively from home. This realization underscores the importance of continued digital transformation efforts to ensure the availability of collaborative technology. In other words, cloud-enabled tools for cross-team work (like Microsoft 365’s Teams) are no longer optional: they are business-critical tools that enable the modern workplace.

Work from Home is Working but How do You Make it Sustainable?

This tumultuous time has taught us that employees can be productive anywhere, not just at the office. The challenge for leaders will be transitioning from the adrenaline-infused crisis mode, where heroic efforts were made to preserve jobs and help the company stay afloat during lockdown. Six months in, and that energy can run low as fatigue takes hold and people begin to burn out.

That may be doubly true for IT, who have experienced a slew of challenges. 81% of IT professionals state that COVID is the biggest pressure they have ever faced in their career. Almost two-thirds have been asked to perform tasks they have never done before. 71% implemented projects in just weeks that had previously been slated to take place in several months, or even years. As a result of these pressures, 95% of IT teams have changed their tech priorities. Instead, most now consider the digital experience to be their biggest priority.

Move Back-Burner Agenda Items to the Front

Now, companies need to do more than just get by. Arriving at the ‘next normal’ is the new imperative, so the company can begin to resume operations that may have been put on hold during the first six months of the pandemic. Planning your digital transformation strategy should include ways to incorporate the following goals into your agenda:

Among this list, network security should be a top priority. Many businesses introduced remote working without doing proper research into security so they could implement the right methods and tools to close security gaps. That was understandable, given the circumstances, but now it is time to shore up defenses, fill security gaps, and improve visibility and control over the network – especially when edge or cloud devices are involved. Now that the workforces are starting to return we need to ensure the business has no laggards to adopting the changes made to support and transform the business. There needs to be a focus on ensuring the entire workforce is operating as efficiently as before - or more efficiently – and don’t forget to track the adoption of any new technologies.

Looking Ahead to an Agile, Transformed World

If there is a silver lining to the global pandemic, it is the increased flexibility that employers and employees enjoy with the choice to work from home. Enabling flexible working arrangements satisfies a growing trend: 73% of workers would love for their employers to embrace the work from home paradigm. Putting these measures in place could increase employee satisfaction across your organization, and save money on real estate over time.

Neither IT teams nor business units can afford to go back to antiquated, non-agile ways of working. These outdated paradigms simply do not deliver in the 21st century, especially in lean times. Leaders must now look for ways to build resilience, responsiveness, and agility into their companies. The answer for all three initiatives is digital transformation.
